#6 Upper Iowa picks up first ever mat win over #4 Minnesota State

FAYETTE (KWWL) -- 6th ranked Upper Iowa picked up early momentum with a first match upset and rode that to their first ever win over #4 Minnesota State 24-18.

Tyler Mumbulo, ranked 6th at 125, got the ball rolling with an early takedown on 4th ranked Andy Forstner.  Mumbulo sealed the deal with late back points to pick up a 5-2 decision.

The Peacocks and Mavericks exchanged blows through the middle weights until Upper Iowa regained the momentum at 174 when 3rd ranked Mitch Norton worked 8th ranked Ben Becker into a cradle before picking up a 3rd period fall to give Upper Iowa a 16-12 lead in the meet.

They finally clinched it at 197 in a battle of unranked wrestlers.  With the match tied, Upper Iowa's Nick Shandri picked up a takedown on John McCabe in the final 30 seconds for a one point victory.

Thursday's win puts the Peacock's in the driver's seat in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  Upper Iowa is now 4-0 in conference matches and 10-1 overall.
