Two events in Eastern Iowa raising money for Haiti relief

EASTERN IOWA (KWWL) -- Two different events are being held in Eastern Iowa on Thursday to help raise money for Haiti relief.

Capri College in Dubuque, Cedar Rapids and Davenport will be donating 100% of proceeds from haircuts and 50% of proceeds from the sale of products sold in the salon toward the relief effort.

Capri will also match any donations that are given by staff and students.

The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, 2010.

In Iowa City, you can have lunch with the Chefs at the Iowa Memorial Union from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and help the relief effort in Haiti.

The chefs will feature a special Haitian menu and the proceeds will go to the Haiti Relief and Development Fund of the American Red Cross, Grant Wood Area Chapter.

The cost of the meal is $10 and $6 of that amount will benefit the Grant Wood American Red Cross Haiti fund.

The goal is to raise $5,000 for earthquake relief efforts.

Live music is planned and computers will be available to make online donations to the Red Cross.

The four-course meal was planned by Lucy Joseph, a Haitian graduate student at the University of Iowa.

Joseph, and a group of Haitian students, helped advise the IMU Chefs on the authenticity of food.  The menu includes Haitian potato and beet salad, garden salad with lime chile vinaigrette, chicken creole, red beans and rice and pineapple carrot cake with citrus glaze.
