Despite recent cold weather - heating costs down from last year

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -  People are seeing higher bills this month because of a cold snap in December.

But it's not as bad as it could be.

According to Alliant Energy, natural gas bills were down 24% when you compare December 2008 and December 2009. That's an average savings of $42 per customer.

When you compare October-December 2008 to October-December 2009, natural gas bills for Alliant Energy customers were down 19%. That's an average savings of $63 per customer.

Alliant Energy says that the biggest reason why the cost is down for customers has to do with lower natural gas prices.

Coming up tonight at 10, Lauren Squires visits with Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to find out what kind of need there is for assistance this winter season.
