Road conditions slowly improving across Iowa

AMES (KWWL) -- The Iowa DOT says road conditions are still improving as snowplows make progress reopening roads, the winds diminish and the sun warms up roads.

In fact, as of 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, I-35 from U.S. 30 (Ames) to Albert Lea, Minnesota is back open.

As of 10:00 a.m., the portion of Highway 218 between Vinton and Highway 30 is back open as well.  The State Patrol warns that the road is down to one lane in some areas due to drifting snow and vehicles off the road.

In Cedar Falls, University Avenue from Horseshoe Drive to Ridgeway Avenue has been plowed and is back open.

Also, Highway 3 west of Waverly and Highway 18 north of Waverly are back open but, travel is still not advised.

Drivers should expect areas of low visibility, snow blowing over the roadway, and patches of mixed ice and snow.

For road condition updates visit or call 511 from any phone.

The DOT does warn drivers to watch for intermittent lane closures over the next few days as tow trucks work to get vehicles out of ditches.
