Independence Schools delay final budget decisions

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -- The winter storm is postponing Independence School Board members from making a final decision on a proposal to close East Elementary.

The board is rescheduling their Monday meeting for Wednesday night at 6:00 in the Middle School Commons.  They're voting on a plan which would cut nearly $800,000 from the 2010-2011 budget.  It also requires students to consolidate from four main buildings to three.

Parents and teachers have had mixed reactions at recent public hearings.  Some are upset about cuts to the music, marketing, and elementary art programs.  They also don't want the seventh and eighth grade kids moving to the high school.

Supporters believe this is the best way to cut the budget while maintaining the bulk of the academic programs.  Many have said, the community needs to rally around whatever decision the board makes.
