Dubuque Fighting Saints to bring tradition and success

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Dubuque hockey fans will welcome the Fighting Saints back on the ice next fall. Today the team announced its nickname, logo and colors. The Fighting Saints will renew rivalry between many Eastern Iowa teams.

It only took a few seconds to reveal Dubuque's newest hockey team. Saturday dozens of fans gathered to welcome the Dubuque Fighting saints to the USHL family. The team will play in the new Mystique Ice Center.

"There's a huge buzz in the air it's just exciting. And to just put that whole different hockey perspective back in the USHL," said John Tigges, a youth hockey coach.

Sporting the colors red, white and silver, the team will replace the current Dubuque Thunderbirds and continue to build the youth hockey program.

"We're not gonna take anything away with what we've earned but we will step our program up to a new level and our rivalries are already back in place," said Tigges.

Former player, two time Olympic gold medalist and Stanley cup winner, Gary Suter greeted fans. He says he's excited to see his old team back on the ice.

"I know it was a huge stepping stone for me in my career and I probably wouldn't have had the career I had without playing here in Dubuque," said Suter.

Owners say they chose the Fighting Saints because of their past success. After 21 seasons with the USHL, the team has brought home three Clark Cup trophies, and produced a number of NCAA Division I and National Hockey League (NHL) players. .

"It'll be great for these guys to watch players grow and advance. The thunderbirds have a great program as well and the USHL is just a couple notches above that and they'll be able to follow guys from here to division one and then possibly pros," said Suter.

Now hockey fans and players alike are looking forward to success on the ice. The team will begin playing next fall in the new Mystique Ice Center. Information about tickets will be released in the coming months.
