Hundreds of electronics forego the landfill

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- A sustainability grant stopped hundreds of electronics from going to the landfill this weekend.

Keyboards, television sets, computers and many other electronics were dropped off at Iowa City's Electronic Recycling Collection.

The items were then taken to Midwest Electronic Recovery in Walford to be recycled.

"There's a lot of valuable materials in the electronics that can be saved and used again. There are precious metals in there and it is also bad for the environment for them to go into the landfill so if we can keep things out of the landfill that don't need to go into the landfill that have other ways to be used its all the better for everybody." Iowa City Public Library Maeve Clark said.

The city and the Iowa City Public Library organized the event as part of ECO Iowa City.

ECO Iowa City is a project funded by a $57,000 grant from the International City/County Management Association.
