Benefit for Buchanan County fire victims

WAVERLY/INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) Brad and Carlen Shannon are newlyweds, but unfortunately they lost their Buchanan County home after a fire.

"Brad and Carlen had two pets, one apparently is fine and the other one they lost. They lost Carlen's car and everything has been damaged in the house," said Paul Stevenson.

Paula Stevenson's daughter went to school with Carlen. After the fire, she was asked to help with a benefit for Brad and Carlen.

"We were ready to do that. My husband Dave and I are really close to Carlen. She's like our daughter," said Stevenson.

The benefit is Saturday night at the Independence 4-H building. Stevenson is helping with food. She said Fareway in Independence and Martin Brothers in Cedar Falls donated many of the items.

The goal is to raise at least $1,000 because the Buchanan County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is matching up to that amount.

Stevenson said besides food, two bands will perform and there's a kids zone. She hopes people come out to support the Shannons.

"The devastation and the toll it takes on you is just ridiculous. If you've never had to live this you don't understand," she said.

Stevenson said, for the time being, the Shannons are staying with Brad's parents, but hopefully this benefit will help them get back on their feet.

The benefit dinner and dance is from 7 p.m. to Midnight. It's at the 4-h building on 12th street Northeast in Independence. The cost is $10.

You can also make a monetary donation to Bank Iowa under the Shannon Benefit Fund.
