Wartburg Women Hold Off Luther 63-59

WAVERLY – A strong effort on the glass helped propel Wartburg College to a 63-59 win over Iowa Conference rival Luther Thursday, Jan. 21.

The Knights, moving to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the league with their 11th win in the last 12 games, out-boarded the Norse (7-10, 2-6) 46-34. The inside duo of sophomore center Emily Timmermans of Vinton and junior center Katie Zittergruen of Van Horne combined for 14 boards.

Wartburg trailed their guests throughout the opening frame and didn't take their first lead until sophomore guard Stephanie Reiter of LaPorte City converted a conventional three-point play with 2:52 left. The Knights, leading 29-28 at the break, opened their advantage to as much as eight (57-49) in the second half. Luther rallied back down the stretch, closing the gap to two at one point (58-56), but never regained the lead.
