Wartburg Men Beat Luther 69-55

WAVERLY (KWWL) -- Wartburg College placed five players in double figures Thursday, Jan. 21, during a 69-55 Iowa Conference win over Luther.

Playing in front of a crowd of 1,000 fans at Levick Arena in the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center, the Knights weathered a strong three-point shooting display from the visiting Norse (seven of 12 – 58.3 percent) in the first half. Luther opened as large as a seven-point lead (34-27) during the stanza before the Orange and Black caught them with a quick 7-0 run. Luther (8-8 overall, 2-6 IIAC) led 38-36 at halftime.

The second half was all Knights. Wartburg hit better than 47 percent from the field (11 of 23 – 47.8 percent) and held Luther to less than 35 percent (eight of 23 – 34.8). Head coach Dick Peth's team opened the half on a 20-6 roll and never looked back.

Sophomore forward Cole Danielson of Marshalltown was atop the double-digit scoring parade with 16 points. Senior forward Kelly McCarville of Cresco added 13, seven rebounds, a blocked shot and two steals. Senior forward Mitch Eslick of Fort Dodge and sophomore forward Jordan Sathoff of Packwood each turned in 12-point nights with Sathoff blocking two Luther shot attempts and pulling down seven boards as did Eslick. Senior guard Jarrett Williams of Chicago, Ill., came off the bench to tally 10 points.
