Hawkeye students want crosswalk

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Students at Hawkeye Community College would like to see a crosswalk like this one installed along Orange Rd. along with another traffic device. They say it can be dangerous for so many students who walk across the street to get to their apartment. Some are afraid that drivers on Orange Rd. may not be able to properly see them and that with expanding enrollments more students will end up living near campus. The college has already started to talk with the city about installing some type of traffic device along Orange Rd. but students went before the city council Monday to plead their case.

"There's no entrance where the students cross but where the students are leaving or going to class there's a hazard that a student not paying attention crossing the road or a driver not paying attention could cause an accident," said student Eli Brus.

The students also say that right now, there's no particular place for students to cross so they all cross at different sections of the road. They say a crosswalk would put everyone crossing at the same place and they say that would make things much safer.
