Asian carp lure entrepreneurs willing to harvest it

THOMSON, IL (KWWL) -- Some entrepreneurs say they have figured out how to control the Asian carp, which environmentalists worry are threatening Lake Michigan.

They say it all comes down to over fishing the Illinois River for the carp. The only snag is, they don't have the funding to make it happen.

Mike Schafer's northern Illinois fishery's business over the past year turned 12 million pound of the fish into everything from fillets to fertilizer.

Now others are angling to get in on the action. A two-man team wants to build eight carp-processing plants, while another group looks to build a plant that will turn the carp into an extract used to make flavored seafood products.

But they say the taxpayers need to subsidize the harvests to make them viable.
