A nation went dry 90 years ago

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Iowans joined the rest of the country and began practicing prohibition January 16, 1920.

The Volstead Act became effective following ratification of the 18th Amendment by the states.  People across the United States began breaking bottles as it became illegal to make, sell, or transport alcohol.

Prohibition led to a major onset of organized crime and speakeasy's.  Characters like Al Capone came to fame for bootlegging efforts.

Prohibition was repealed by the passage of the 21st Amendment in 1933.
