Cedar Rapids considers hardship advance for homeowners

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Cedar Rapids' mayor says the city is considering options for cash-strapped property owners awaiting flood buyouts.

The City Council is discussing the creation of a "hardship advance" fund.  Property owners would receive an advance from the city, which they would be required to pay back when their buyout is complete.

Mayor Ron Corbett is concerned some people facing tough financial times may rush to agree to their buyout price, without giving it the consideration the homeowner deserves.

He said the city would figure out a way to identify the worst-off property owners.
