Gov. proposes SE Wis. commuter rail service

SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle is proposing legislation that would create commuter rail service between Milwaukee, Kenosha and Racine.

The Democratic governor said Tuesday at a news conference in South Milwaukee that the proposal would help local residents get to where the jobs are.

The measure would be funded, in part, by a half percent sales tax in Milwaukee, which voters approved as part of a larger referendum in September.

Doyle was joined at a news conference by leaders of local businesses, including Bucyrus International of Milwaukee and SC Johnson of Racine. The executives say regional transit would improve commutes for their current employees and allow them to hire people who live farther away.
