IOWA CITY (KWWL) – An afternoon of basketball and fun is planned for Girl Scout Day with the Hawkeyes on Sunday, Jan. 31.

Girls attending the event will have the opportunity to shoot lay-ups on the court and learn cheers from the cheer and dance team before the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team takes on Big Ten rival Purdue in a game televised nationally on ESPN2. The event is sponsored by Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois.

While game time is at 2 p.m. at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, doors will open at 11:30 a.m. for pregame activities, including an exclusive welcome by coaches and a kids' fun zone. Lunch will be available at the concession stands with a discount for Girl Scouts.

There also will be prize drawings and giveaways during the game, as well as autographs with the players after the game. This will be one of the biggest Girl Scout events of the year and girls are invited to bring posters to display during the game. Girl Scouts also are encouraged to wear their sashes, uniforms and other Girl Scout apparel for the day.

Girls should bring clean gym shoes, a water bottle and money for concessions. Cost is $1 per girl and Girl Scout troop leader and $5 for family and friends. The girl fee includes entrance to the basketball game, giveaways, prizes, cheer and dance mini-clinic, shoot-around on the court, a lunch voucher and player and coach autographs; the adult fee includes entrance to the basketball game.

Preregistration may be done before Friday, Jan. 29 by downloading the form from the link on the home page at http://www.GSEIWI.org. Girl Scout seating will be located behind the north basket in the arena. Preordered tickets will be available for pickup at the south entrance will-call window on the day of the game. In addition, additional tickets for Girl Scouts will be available at the group rate at the south entrance only on the day of the game.
