Pain killer overdose on the rise

As the number of prescriptions written for painkillers goes up -- so does the number of patients who overdose.

Researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle studied nearly 10 thousand patients who were given long-term prescriptions for opioid painkillers -- like oxycodone, codeine and morphine.

There were 51 overdoses during the study -- six were fatal.

Even though the risk of overdose was highest among patients given a stronger prescription -- overdose was more common in those taking low doses of the drugs.
