2 plead guilty in assault on Ottumwa officer

OTTUMWA (AP) -- Two people have pleaded guilty in an assault on an Ottumwa police officer last summer.

Officer Reuben Ross was attacked in August as he followed up on a report of car vandalism. He was treated at a hospital for facial and head injuries.

Three of the four people charged in the assault are brothers. The fourth, 18-year-old Domingo Zapata Jr., pleaded guilty to assault on a police officer and has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Twenty-three-year-old Miguel Gallegos has reached a plea deal but details of the agreement aren't being disclosed until a hearing on Jan. 25.

Fifteen-year-old Alejandro Gallego also reached a plea agreement. He has been released to the custody of his mother and placed on probation. He also has been ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.

Nineteen-year-old Amado Gallegos is currently set for trial on Feb. 16.
