Patient death investigation in Grundy County

GRUNDY COUNTY (KWWL)-- A patient at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center has died after wandering outside overnight Saturday.  Rescue crews discovered his body Sunday morning near the hospital building.

The hospital says 88-year-old Warren Feller was an acute care patient, and doctors planned to admit him into the long-term care unit Monday.

"We don't know how he got out and we're still trying to investigate that," CEO Pam Delagardelle said. "Our initial investigation shows we were staffed totally appropriately. It is really trying to discern if there are additional alarms we can put on doors."

The incident is tragic enough, but this particular patient was a well-known member of the Grundy Center community.

"He was a huge supporter of Grundy center and anything, projects that came up, be it the swimming pool, church remodelings, he was the first in line to donate," Mayor Rex Van Wert said.

Van Wert says Feller, a former city council member, inspired him to always be himself.

"I always remembered that whenever something came up and I was trying to decide whether to listen to everyone who was telling me to do something or do what I thought in my heart was right and it was some of the best advice I ever got in public office," Van Wert said.

"Everyone knew Mr. Feller well and loved him, so this is a very difficult time for everyone in our community and our staff as well," Delagardelle said. "We're going to investigate to figure out how it happened, so it never happens again."
