Lawmakers focus on government reorganization

DES MOINES (AP) -- The Legislature will jump-start a fast-track effort to reorganize state government this week by taking the steps needed to figure out how much money it will save through streamlining state operations.

A separate measure scheduled for action this week calls for putting in place an early retirement program for state workers. While lawmakers are still seeking pricetags on those items, Gov. Chet Culver projects that reorganizing government will save $55 million next year and the early retirement incentive could save another $60 million.

Legislative leaders agreed to shorten this year's session from 100 to 80 days to save money, leaving little time to waste in pushing through legislation.
