Loras College Haiti trip canceled

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- A Loras College trip to Haiti has been canceled.  Students who had planned to make the trip to Louveture Cleary School near Port-au-Prince later this month, are no longer.

After reviewing the situation in Haiti with The Haitian Project (the organization that plans the trip to Haiti), the state department and the Loras administration, trip coordinators decided that it is in everyone's interest to cancel the Haiti service trip.

The students don't have the expertise that they need at the moment and there are legitimate worries about the security situation.  The group contacted American Airlines, who gave them a full refund. AA says all flights into Haiti have already been canceled through January 20th.

Students have raised money for several months to take the trip.  They can ether donate that money to The Haitian Project or get a full refund.  The group does not plan to reschedule the trip.

If you would like to donate to their fund you can contact Dave McDermott, the Coordinator of Peace and Justice at Loras College Campus Ministry at 563-588-7056.
