How can you help Haitian earthquake victims?

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The American Red Cross - Hawkeye Chapter and Salvation Army report many people want to help the victims of the Haitian earthquake. They're asking if they can volunteer, or send clothing and care packages. But both non-profits say, the best way for you to help, is to donate money.

"My heart goes out to these people. Because they have nothing to begin with. They are the poorest of the poor," said Salvation Army worker Sue Hennings.

News of the earthquake hit Hennings hard. She spent time at the non-profit's headquarters in Haiti, and Hennings knows first-hand what it's like to lose everything.

"I lived in Parkersburg, and lost my home in Parkersburg. So I know that feeling of just standing in shock in the middle of what used to be your house, and saying, oh my gosh...what do I do now?" she said.

As aid workers attempt to help Haitians sort out their lives, many in Eastern Iowa are asking, what can we do now?

"We have a very generous community that wants to do something. And at this time, financial donations are what those people really need," said Red Cross - Hawkeye Chapter Executive Director Sue Beach.

With a little help from your cell phone, donating requires just one simple message, to the number 90999.

"Text "HAITI", and $10 will automatically come off your phone bill," Beach explained.

Beach said the Red Cross and Salvation Army are using your donations to fly in aid workers, along with basic survival items like water, food, and shelter. And every dollar, truly makes an impact.

"The aid is pouring in. And I am so thankful that we live in a country where people reach out to others," Hennings added.

The Red Cross has already raised millions of dollars through the Text HAITI" campaign. You can also give at your local Red Cross and Salvation Army headquarters. To donate toll-free by phone, call the Red Cross at 1(800) RED-CROSS, or the Salvation Army at 1(800) SAL-ARMY.
