UNI Faculty approve pay cut

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Faculty at the University of Northern Iowa that are represented by UNI United Faculty have approved a $520,000 pay cut.

The members ratified a Memorandum of Understanding that cuts faculty salaries for the remainder of this academic year.  The current academic year ends June 30, 2010.

In exchange, faculty have received a guarantee that no faculty members would be laid off.

Unlike other employees, faculty members will not be taking any unpaid days off, they will simply take the pay cut and work the same amount of hours.

Two-thirds of the members voted and the Memorandum of Understanding was approved by 84% of those that voted.

The average faculty member will see a $929 pay cut.  Part-time faculty will lose $225 while the highest paid faculty could see a more than $4,550 pay cut.

The pay cuts are in addition to the 20% reduction in the state's contribution to UNI faculty retirement benefits.  They will also not get raises or merit pay this year.
