Cedar Falls schools face tough decisions

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Falls school district faces a $1.5 million shortfall in 2011.

Superintendent David Stoaks says three budget scenarios were presented at the board of education meeting Monday night, and all made tax hikes and layoffs seem very likely.

Superintendent Stoaks says the district is positioned as well as any other school in the state to make it through the next few years, but it will be difficult.

District officials say all three options presented Monday assume the restoration of this year's state-imposed 10 percent across-the-board cut totaling $2 million. It also takes into account increased funding. But in the worst-case scenario of reduced state funding and increased costs, all employee groups and programs could face cuts.
