State $313 million short in tax collection

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- A new report shows more people are falling behind on paying their state taxes.

The Iowa Department of Revenue says taxpayers didn't pay $313 million in corporate, individual, sales, withholding and other taxes they owed last year. That's up 14 percent over the previous year.

Revenue agents collected about half -- $156 million, and that's 10 percent less than the year before.

Income taxes make up the biggest portion of the delinquencies. Most owe $2,500 or less.

A proposal before state lawmakers would allow revenue officials to find delinquent taxpayers' bank accounts more quickly and seize the money owed must faster.
