Iowa woman dies after leaving stalled car

SIOUX CITY (AP) - An Iowa woman is dead after abandoning her vehicle when it apparently stalled. Forty-nine-year-old Janie Laurie Toft of rural Salix walked away from her vehicle sometime around Jan. 1.

According to the Woodbury County Sheriff's Department, authorities became aware the woman was missing when relatives requested a wellness check on Jan. 4. Investigators went to her home with a relative and found it vacant.

A search of the area by Toft's brother led to the discovery of the woman's SUV on Jan. 5.

Sheriff's deputies located the woman's body about a mile from the SUV after tracking a lone set of footprints that originated at the vehicle.

Authorities say they haven't determined why the woman abandoned the SUV. It was extremely cold, with blowing and drifting snow, at the time woman left the vehicle.
