Samuel Kirkwood elected in 1860

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Samuel Jordan Kirkwood was elected governor of Iowa January 11, 1860.  Kirkwood took office soon after and served until January 14, 1864.  He was later reelected in 1876, serving that term until 1877.

Kirkwood Community College was named after him in August, 1869.  Until then, it was known as Area 10 Community College.

Samuel Kirkwood also served as a U.S. Senator and U.S. Secretary of the Interior under President James Garfield.
