Inmates get H1N1 vaccine

WATERLOO (KWWL) - 99 inmates of the Black Hawk County Jail, who elected for the shots, will be provided the H1N1 vaccine Wednesday. The vaccines are being provided in a partnership between the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office and the Black Hawk County Health Department.

"I think that it is important to recognize that this population has the need for this service, and by proactively inoculating them, we minimize the risk of an epidemic breakout in our jailing facility." says Sheriff Tony Thompson. "It is an elective process, and not every inmate chose to participate, however, given the current population of the jail it is another step in helping to minimize the costs of illness and treatment for both inmates and staff."

In addition to the shots, the Jail has implemented visitation procedures which should minimize inmate/staff exposure, by limiting access to the public who are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
