Dozens picket job cuts in Anamosa

ANAMOSA (KWWL)-- Budget cuts in Iowa could have some left out in the cold before long.

Right now, about 50 Iowa corrections counselors are set to lose their jobs following Governor Culver's orders to cut ten percent on statewide spending.

Saturday, many of those counselors and others picketed outside the Anamosa State Penitentiary.

They say 12 positions will be cut, which accounts for 55 percent of its social services and treatment departments.

They say that means fewer inmates will get the help they need, and could put Iowans at risk.

"Different sex offenders, substance abusing offenders, violent offenders are going to be released without treatment if you don't have counselors and programming to do that,"  noted correctional counselor Jason Hute.

Union leaders say talks with the state "broke off" late last month. As of now, the 50 counselors will be out of work January 20th.
