More snow than downtown can handle

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Downtown Waterloo has turned into a maze filled with shoveled sidewalks and streets and enclosed by mountains of snow.

Businesses like Classic Kitchen and Bath are making sure their customers can at least get to their door.

"With the snow last time we got a lot and we kind of shoveled throughout the day just to keep it down," said Shauna McElderry of Classic Kitchen and Bath.

"We started working on this thing about four o'clock Wednesday afternoon. We're wrapping up all the streets, all the priorities, all the residential streets are looking really good right now and so now we have time to go downtown and start picking up the snow from the downtown area," said Superintendent of the Streets, Steve Decker.

The city of Waterloo has several sites around downtown for the excess snow. One lot is already full. These sites are only for city and not for the public.

"If you're a private contractor making money and hauling snow for the private sector that city snow dump is not for you," said Decker.

As for businesses they are also having trouble finding places to put all of the snow.

"I mean we shovel it towards the street but you want to make sure there is enough room for people to park and get up to the side walk so it is.... We kind of try to put it around the trees all the snow, but yeah it's kind of hard to find a spot," said McElderry.

The Streets Department will be working Friday evening to clear the snow out of downtown. They will start in the less traveled parts first and hit the main areas like 4th Street.
