Airmail history made in Iowa in 1920

Posted:

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The first airmail flight from Chicago to Iowa made a stop in Iowa City to refuel on January 8, 1920.  It was the only stop along the journey.

The pilot on the return trip, Walter J. Smith, had the privilege of flying a live ten pounds piglet.  That pig was the first piece of "mail" flown from Iowa City to Chicago.

The pig arrived safely and history was made.
