Fire swept Mason City in 1913

MASON CITY (KWWL) -- Fire started in the Lombardo confectionary store on State Street at 1:30 a.m. January 7, 1913.  Before it ended, several business blocks on State and Michigan streets were in ashes.

According to an article published in the Globe Gazette, the Mason City early morning was extremely cold and difficult for firefighters to fight the blaze.  The buildings that house the Globe Gazette and the Wheeler hotel were saved as a result of much hard work.

Total loss was $800,000.  As a result of the fire, a score or more families were homeless. Their furniture and other household effects were either burned or damaged.
