It's not too late to get a flu shot

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) — Linn County Public Health (LCPH) encourages residents to get the seasonal flu and H1N1 flu shot if they have not already. The flu season is not over. The flu vaccine received this month will still give protection from the potentially deadly virus. Last week, The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported two additional H1N1-related deaths in Iowa.

"There has been, for good reason, a major focus on the H1N1 strain of influenza this year, but we must not forget to protect ourselves from the seasonal flu as it can be just as dangerous, especially for the elderly" says Curtis Dickson, Director Linn County Public Health. "If you have not received either the seasonal flu or the H1N1 flu vaccine, there is still time and it's still important to do so."

Many of the area MercyCare clinics also have a supply of H1N1 and seasonal flu shots available for established patients. Both of Mercy's urgent care clinics, MercyCare North and MercyCare South, have the shots available to the public on a walk-in basis.

Seasonal and H1N1 flu shots are available through St. Luke's Physicians and Clinics offices by appointment only.

Residents may also receive the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccine at a number of pharmacies in Linn County.

LCPH and the Community Health Free Clinic will be holding free H1N1 vaccination clinics for the general public on the following dates. Seasonal flu vaccine will not be available at these clinics.

Two clinics on Mon., Jan. 11 and Tues., Jan. 12 will be by appointment only and will operate from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and be held at Linn County Public Health, 501 13th St NW
