Hawkeyes outlast Georgia Tech for Orange Bowl championship

MIAMI, FLORIDA (KWWL) – The Iowa Hawkeyes are the 2010 Fedex Orange Bowl Champions.  Iowa jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, then hung on over the course of the final 3 quarters to defeat Georgia Tech 24-14.

The Hawkeyes started the scoring in the first quarter when Ricky Stanzi hit Marvin McNutt in the corner of the endzone for the early 7-0 lead.  Following a long 54 yard strike from Stanzi to Tony Moeaki, Iowa dented the scoreboard again as Stanzi found Colin Sandeman on a 21 yard touchdown pass.  It was Sandeman's first time finding the endzone all season, and it had Iowa up 14-0.

Georgia Tech finally found the endzone in the second quarter as Jerrard Tarrant picked off a Stanzi pass and returned it 40 yards for the score, as the Yellow Jackets cut Iowa's lead to 7 just before half.

Following a Daniel Murray field goal, Tech again scored in the fourth as Anthony Allen busted into the endzone from one yard out to cut Iowa's lead to 3.

The Hawkeyes put the game away when freshman running back Brandon Wegher broke to the outside and rumbled 32 yards to give Iowa a 10 point lead with under 2 minutes remaining.  Wegher led the Iowa rushing attack with an impressive 113 yards on the gorund.
