UPDATE: Waterloo East coach arrested on drug charges

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Waterloo East High School football coach Antonio Mays was arrested on drug charges.

Interim Police Chief John Beckman said the 32-year-old was taken into custody at 9:00 p.m. Monday night.  An officer initially pulled him over for having no front license plate, and non-functioning back plate lights.

During questioning, Mays admitted to having a small amount of marijuana in his pants pocket.  The officer also found a small amount of the drug in his car.

Investigators arrested him for possession of marijuana.  He paid bond, and was released about three hours later.

Just last month Edward Madlock resigned his position as Waterloo East's girls basketball coach after he was arrested and charged with marijuana possession.

Sharon Miller with the Waterloo Community Schools said that Mays resigned his coaching position Tuesday morning.  School officials are not commenting any further on the situation.

Mays also held a faculty position at East High School that is funded through the Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates (I-JAG) program.  We have learned that he met with staff from the program on Tuesday and is currently on unpaid administrative leave from that position.
