Iowa gets emergency food, shelter funds

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin has announced the awarding of $1.15 million to the state to fund the Emergency Food and Shelter Program.

The Iowa Democrat said Monday the money is being awarded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds are used to supplement food, shelter, rent, mortgage and utility assistance programs for people with non-disaster related emergencies.

The money is being disbursed among 17 counties, with Polk County getting the largest amount -- $190,778.

About $559,000 will be set aside, which will allow Iowa to help areas that undergo economic changes due to events like plant closings.
