Public art ordinance passes in Linn County

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Linn County now has a public art ordinance and will soon have a Public Art Commission to go along with it.

The ordinance, which establishes the commission, was passed unanimously at Monday's meeting.

The Public Art Commission will develop policy related to selecting artists, commissioning artwork, reviewing design and installation of artwork and the maintenance of artwork that will be placed in new or renovated county buildings.

A budget of one percent of the total estimated construction costs of each project has been established for public art in county buildings.

In the ordinance, public art is defined as "original works of art which may include sculpture, fountains, bas-reliefs, mosaics, frescoes, wall hangings, crafts, photography, pictures or other enhancements to be integrated into the total environment of the building".

The Board of Supervisors will talk about appointments to the Public Arts Commission and appoint members.
