Iowa Capitol Building fire of 1904

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Capitol Building caught fire January 4, 1904.  It happened in the north wing of the structure.

Two years before, efforts had begun to modernize the building.  Electric lighting, elevators, and telephones were among improvements being made when the fire broke out.

The House chamber, Supreme Court chamber, and other offices were damaged.  Damaged areas were repaired and the projects were finished.

Original construction on the building had begun in 1871.  The building was dedicated in 1884, and finished in 1886.
