17% Community college students default on loans

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Nearly 17 percent of Iowa community college students default on their student loans within three years of graduating.

New federal data shows the default rate is more than five times the average for those who attend Iowa's public universities and three times the average of those graduating from Iowa's private colleges.

An official at the Des Moines Area Community College says one reason could be that community college graduates are less likely to get high-paying jobs right out of college.

She also said they're less likely to get jobs that offer student loan forgiveness.
