Neighbors Report Hearing Gun Shot at Iowa City Apartment

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Police are trying to figure out how a 20 year old woman died in her Iowa City apartment late Wednesday night. They are not saying much at this time, but are calling Kylie Perkins death "suspicious."

According to a friend, Perkins had just moved into the apartment on Aber Avenue. Neighbors said police removed the crime scene tape sometime Thursday morning, but there is still an officer guarding the door.

Three college students, including Patrick Cronin, live in the apartment two floors down from Perkins. They said they heard a gunshot Wednesday night during their bible study. But they assumed it came from outside, and did not call 911.

Cronin said, "it wasn't until just today actually that I found out what had actually happened. I had thought it was just a noise or a gunshot or whatever. I didn't know there was a dead body associated with it."

Someone did call the police to report a robbery on Aber Avenue, although that person gave an address which does not exist. Investigators were led to Perkins apartment after questioning people along the street.

KWWL ran into a friend of Perkins in the hallway outside her apartment. The woman and her husband had stopped by to check on the 20 year old. She didn't want to go on camera, but said Perkins had a boyfriend, and was excited about living in her new apartment. We cannot confirm if the pair lived together. Perkins' friend said she had just talked to Perkins on Tuesday, and made plans to go out this weekend.

An autopsy was performed Thursday morning. Investigators have not released the report.
