Eastern Iowa town's water supply contaminated

PRINCETON (KWWL) -- Officials in Princeton are warning residents about high nitrate levels in their drinking water that could make infants seriously ill.

Police say water sample results taken Tuesday show nitrate levels above the maximum contaminant level.

Police say infants under six months old could suffer from shortness of breath and blue coloration of the skin.

The condition could be fatal if left untreated.

Residents were warned that boiling the water will not fix the problem, and could make the nitrates more concentrated.

The Princeton Water Supply says that the water is safe for adults and children older than six months to drink.

No cause for the higher nitrate levels has been identified.
