Cheerleaders Prepare for Bowl Debut

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The West Side High School cheerleaders are ready to make their debut at the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. But first, they wanted to catch a bite to eat. Ten percent of Tuesday evening's sales at Wendy's is helping to pay for their trip to New Orleans.

They have a lot of hard work in store for them when they arrive in the "Big Easy". Coach Lisa Knapp said the well-known choreographer for the old halftime routine was recently arrested. So the Sugar Bowl coordinators changed the plans for every team performing.

"We are scratching that routine now, so once the girls get to New Orleans they'll have to learn a brand new routine from scratch. So they have to work really hard, and all the hours they put into the original routine is now scratched."

The girls take off for the airport at six Wednesday morning, and return Sunday in time to head back to class. Their coach said generous donations from the community are covering most of their expenses.
