Waterloo Post Office established in 1851

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A post office was established in Waterloo December 29, 1851.

The city was originally called "Prairie Rapids Crossing."  Charles Mullan petitioned for a post office in town and was charged with naming the location.

Tradition had it that as Mullan flipped through a list of other post offices in the United States, he came upon the name "Waterloo."  This was a name he liked, and that would become the name of the post office.

The city later took the same name.  Mullan served as the first postmaster from the day it opened until August 11, 1854.
