Recent weather causing problems for snowmobilers

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Questions about snowmobile safety are on the rise after two teens are rescued from an area creek. It happened yesterday afternoon just northwest of Dunkerton near the intersection of Raymond and Bennington Roads.

Officials with the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Department say two teens were riding their snowmobiles when they fell through the ice crossing Crane Creek. They also say neither one was injured.

Dick Melick has been an avid snowmobiler for decades and has been instructing safety courses since the 1976. Melick says recent weather has caused serious problems for those hitting the trails.

"They need to avoid waterways where possible and any of the creeks. They need to check it out and see if it's been flooded and if it has, stay away," said Melick

According to the Iowa DNR, a snowmobile needs at least five inches of ice to cross a waterway. Temperatures will only be in the 20's the next few days which should help improve ice conditions.
