State Park Closings

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has lost a quarter of its general-fund money in the last year.  This could force park rangers to close off park areas which do not generate income for the DNR.

Director Richard Leopold said all parks will remain open this summer, but they may end up roping off selected areas.

He explained, the state's parks are seeing record numbers of visitors.  However, staffing has dropped from the usual 300 summer workers, to about forty in summer 2010.  Rangers will likely rope off some trails, parks, and beaches.

The department is asking people to volunteer to help make up for the fewer maintenance workers.  Leopold said federal stimulus money and private foundations may help alleviate some of the financial burden.
