Matter of Faith: Puppets of Praise

DECORAH (KWWL) Students with First United Methodist Church in Decorah are sharing their faith through puppets. It's called Puppets of Praise.

The group visits nursing homes and retirement communities spreading God's love.

"Our goal as a puppet team is just to bring a smile to someone's face, share Jesus' love, lift the spirits of an older person," said Janis Mineart.

Puppet Ministry Director Janis Mineart was inspired to start the group several years ago after attending a puppetry festival.

"I always explain to them that they're not performing, it's a ministry, not a performance and I think they've learned team work, cooperation, working hard toward a goal," she said.

Adam Knight is one of the puppet masters. He said he can tell their performances mean a lot to people.

"It really warms your heart to be able to do that for other people," said Knight.

Knight said he's learned a lot and hopes to teach a lot through puppets of praise.

"Jesus is our one role model and we should always follow him in whatever we do," he said.

Director Janis Mineart said the ministry has helped the students grow in many ways.

"They're very energetic, which is a good thing and they've learned to channel that energy creatively in a positive way," she said.

"When I'm up there performing I try to do the best I can and try to make people in the audience understand God easier," said Knight.
