Iowa judges' pay top national average

DES MOINES (KWWL) - A report shows salaries of state judges in Iowa top the U.S average, but their net pay has dropped in recent years.

According to the National Center for State Courts, district judges in Iowa ranked 18th among states, appeal judges were 16th and associate high court judges ranked 14th.

Iowa trial judges earned about $138,000 last year. The national average was about $135,000.

Iowa judges' pay climbed for five years before budget cuts froze salaries and forced court employees to take unpaid leave. Salaries haven't changed since 2008, and aren't expected to rise next year.

Iowa courts spokesman Steve Davis says changes in judges' retirement accounts require them to contribute more, which results in a net pay decrease. Those contributions will continue to climb.
