Appel shows off versatility for Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER (KWWL) -- Taylor Appel can do just about anything.  The Grundy Center senior is a 3 starter on the football field as the Spartans' quarterback.  He's also 2-time all-conference in golf, but right now it's leading his Spartans deep into the postseason on the basketball court that's his number one priority.

"We made it to substate last year," says Taylor, "Hopefully we can overcome that and get down to the state tournament."

Taylor knows getting there, however, takes teamwork and chemistry.  That's something this Grundy Center team has plenty of.

Spartan leading scorer Trevor Hook has started alongside Taylor for quite some time.  The twosome has hooked up on several deep routes in 3 years on the football field, and even more in their 4 years of varsity basketball.

"I think the whole idea of teamwork and chemistry, you can't understate that," says Grundy Center head coach Rollie Ackerman.

"Trevor and I have been together on varsity all four years now," adds Taylor, "and everybody else on the team, we've been playing since 3rd, 4th grade, and we're finally all back together."

There's another side of Taylor Appel that few get to see, as he's managed to combine a love of sport with a great talent for graphic design.  Taylor designed this year's Spartan basketball poster, and is currently working on his own graduation announcements.

As for that project, Grundy Center art teacher Rhonda Sternhagen says Taylor's design is second to none.

"It is the best one I've seen probably in 5 or 6 years that I've done this assignment with multitudes of drawing classes," says Sternhagen.

Whether it's his work in the class room or out on the court, Taylor Appel is certainly bound for success.

"He's a very talented young man, says Ackerman, "It all depends on what he chooses to do, and I think it will work itself out for Taylor."
