Delivery driver smells smoke, saves business

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- It may be a case of being in the right place at the right time, but a delivery driver is being credited with saving a Cedar Rapids business.

James Carney, a delivery driver for Reinhart Foods, was making his morning deliveries on Thursday morning at Zeppelin's Bar and Grill at 5300 Edgewood Road NE, Suite 500, when he smelled something burning and then saw smoke coming from a storage room.

Carney called 9-1-1.

Once on scene, firefighters found three totes of burning aprons and towels.

They were able to take the totes outside before the fire was able to spread to anything else.

There was minimal smoke damage to the restaurant.

The fire has been ruled unintentional and is being blamed on spontaneous heating, firefighters saying that the laundry was still hot when removed from the dryer and put in the totes.

Laundry should be cooled before being put in totes to help prevent spontaneous heating.
