Iowa tops 3 million in latest census estimate

DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) - Iowa's population has grown to more than 3 million, according to the latest census estimate.

The U.S. Census Bureau released its population estimates for July 2009 on Wednesday. They show Iowa's population grew to just over 3 million in July 2009, up from 2.99 million in July 2008.

The Census Bureau initially reported that Iowa topped 3 million in 2008 but lowered the estimate in Wednesday's release.

The report shows Iowa added 13,869 people, up 0.5 percent.

Iowa ranks 30th in the nation in population.

Texas gained more people than any other state, but Wyoming saw the largest percentage growth at 2.12 percent.

California remains the most populous state with 37 million people. Michigan, Maine and Rhode Island were the only states to lose population.
